Welcome to our Wamumbi Orphan Care website!
Our non-profit community based organisation (CBO) operates from Kangema town in Kangema District, Kenya and is dedicated to providing support for orphaned children in the area.
Kangema is in the Central Highlands of Kenya situated near the Aberdares National Park, with livelihoods depending largely on subsistence agriculture and some commercial crops such as tea and coffee. Dairy cows are also a common feature on smallholder farms. Although rich in natural resources, due to population increase and pressure on land, farms have considerably reduced in size due to traditional inheritance practices and therefore have become less viable as a means of providing for a large family. HIV/AIDS is prevalent in the area and has had a devastating impact on local communities and their ability to provide for the many children left behind. On top of losing their parents, and some being infected themselves, these children have to face the social stigma attached to their situation. Even those who have the benefit of having a granny, grandpa, aunt, uncle, family friend to look after them, it is a struggle. Not only do we aim to provide support for children orphaned by HIV/AIDS but also those whose parents have died by other means. Some of the children we are trying to help were affected harshly by the 2007 post-election violence and lost family members in the ensuing riots.
